120/80GB SSD or 2x 60/40GB. Any difference?

Post by nojones »

Hi all. I am new to Virtualbox.

I'm going for OS install. I'm planning to trade Sandboxie for Virtualbox PUEL. Planning to run single W7 or XP for starters. I'm not with seriously GB heavy software. Is there difference when it comes to realworld performance using separate SSD for VM?

Other hardware specifications : AMD 1055T (6core) / 8GB / Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 / 2x Storage HDDs / HD4570

Thank You in Advance :)

Having the virtual disk of the vm on the same drive as the host OS can lead to contention if both OSs are doing a lot of I/O. If you only plan to run one vm at a time, having its virtual disk on a different spindle (or SSD) might be better, but I am not sure that you would notice the difference in most cases.

I have run things both ways and have never noticed much difference, but I rarely have both host and guest really hitting the disk at the same time.

When dealing with SSDs, you will hardly notice the difference because they are very fast. Now if you use a mechanical drive, you know, with those magnetic disks and make a lot of noice, they have moving parts and such (:P), then it's a different matter. You get what BillG explained.

Thank You for swift replies BillG and Sasquatch :)

I'll go with 128GB. It is also more flexible to have one bigger than 2 smaller disks.
