Relative measure of virtual machine power

I am looking to use a number of virtual machines for testing purposes such as load/performance tests. I'm wondering if there's an established way to take a relative measure of a machine's instantaneous processing power.

I realise it is difficult to get an exact measure of this sort of thing, but I would like a way to compare the power of two virtual guests in a relative way. I've seen this done before where an executable has been run on the machine which attempts to execute as many iterations of a complex calculation as it can in .5 of a second, and the outcome of this test has been used as the relative measure. Is there any better/other way to determine the relative power of one virtual box against another?

any suggestions welcome.

I realise this question is not necessarily specific to virtual machines, but thought there may be others attempting the same thing out there.
