Hello All,
I have an XP sp3 guest running in VirtualBox 3.1.6_OSE r59338 on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS. I believe the network settings are correct and working because the XP guest can connect to and download files from the internet. It can also connect to a Samba share on my Ubuntu host. What the XP guest can't do is connect to or download updates from Windows Update. I've registered Wups2.dll taken from this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144. Below is the error I repeatedly receive in c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log:
DnldMgr Error 0x80072efd occurred while downloading update; notifying dependent calls.

Any ideas?

Not a VB problem. If you have internet in the Guest, then it's a corruption of the Guest OS. Have you verified data integrity using sfc /scannow?
