Virtual Media Manager-Being depreciated?

I've been using VirtualBox now since around 2.x release versions, and something I've recently noticed is that it feels like the Virtual Media Manager aspect of the GUI is being depreciated.
At this point, what is it's useful function? It contains a list of virtual hard disks that have been (at least at one point) used, as well as CD Images that have (at least at one point) used. There is no way to add any media to the manager directly (for future use), nor is there a way to select media that is part of the VMM to use in a Virtual Machine. Every time I need to add a image to a VM, I have to located it on my directory path and add it that way, unless it was one of the last couple images added to a VM.
Is this the beginning of the end of the VMM, or is there a re-purposing of the manager happening that is occurring over a period of time?
And this may or may not be related to the fact that deleted machines do not delete all files on x64 systems, "but this will be fixed in the next version" popup that has been happening I think since at least 4.0.2. I know its at least been 2 versions, and just verified it still exists in v4.0.8.
