VBox crashes on login - Ubuntu 11.04 with 3D acceleration

Post by eternyle »

Hi
I have an issue with Virtualbox itself crashing at login on Ubuntu when 3D acceleration is enabled. I.e. it boots to login screen, I click username, I enter password and press enter, the login box vanishes (just showing the background) and a few seconds later I get a crash notification from windows ("Virtualbox Manager has stopped working [...]").

This is 100% reproducible - disable 3d accel and it goes away, enable and it comes back.
Additionally, I can log in by specifying an "Ubuntu (safe mode)" session or "Ubuntu classic (no effects)". Plain "Ubuntu" or "Ubuntu classic" crash.
I assume it's something to do with Unity...

Using latest Virtualbox (4.0.8) with Win7 64bit host and Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 32bit guest. This is a fresh install of Ubuntu, completely updated and with guest additions installed.

I don't know how this problem has appeared between boots of the OS, but it seems here to stay now - maybe the guest additions did it? Can't remember the exact order of installations and rebooting. I can post a debug log...if someone can point me to a reference on how to generate them.

Reason I'm posting here is because the bug tracker told me to if I was at all unsure about submitting a bug. So here we go. Virtualbox itself crashing seems like a bug to me.

p.s. why at forum registration does it ask for version (i.e. OSE or the other one)? From the quick check I did, aren't they now the same thing?

Well that's interesting. I just read http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=15679
DKMS wasn't installed so I installed it and reinstalled VBox additions.

Rebooted and it now works fine with 3D acceleration.

Seems to me that Virtualbox additions should refuse to install if there is a dependency missing that could cause Virtualbox itself to crash.
Admittedly, there was a warning when I first installed the additions...something along the lines of "If the installation fails ...", but it didn't fail. So I paid no attention. Should I be submitting this as a bug? I just feel that anything that can cause virtualbox on the host to crash needs looking at, but that's my inexperienced pov.

My mistake, still doesn't work.

Try upgrading your video drivers on the host. I had a similar problem with my Toshiba laptop with the Intel integrated graphics. The tricky part was forcing the Intel reference drivers to install, because Intel's setup didn't detect my chipset as officially supported (thanks, Toshiba). But I was able to successfully install the driver manually and it solved the VirtualBox crashing problem.

Well how interesting. As it happens, I too have a Toshiba laptop with Intel integrated graphics. I now have the joy of trying to dig through the intel website.
