Ubuntu Studios v11.04 Snapshots Broken
Posted: 22. May 2011, 18:23
Host OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Guest OS: Ubuntu Studios v11.04 64-bit
VirtualBox: v4.0.8
When I take a snapshot of an Ubuntu Studios guest OS, try to restore it, and then delete the snapshot, the guest OS becomes corrupt and snapshots for all guest OS's quit working until I restart VirtualBox. I have not been able to reproduce this on Ubuntu v11.04, just Ubuntu Studios v11.04. Below are the steps I have taken to reproduce the problem:
1. Install Ubunut Studios (20 GB hard drive, 2,048 MB RAM, 3D Acceleration, 128 MB video memory)
2. Installed dkms package using Sasquatch's forum tutorial. The build-essential and linux-headers-generic packages are already installed.
3. Installed Guest Additions (load the CD, double-click autorun.sh, put in sudo password, installs with no errors or warnings).
4. Shutdown guest OS.
5. Take a snapshot. This is the first and only snapshot taken.
6. Boot the guest OS. Once booted, just shutdown the guest OS.
7. Restore to the snapshot.
8. Delete the snapshot.
At step #8 VirtualBox thinks for about 7 seconds then declares the guest OS Inaccessible. Going to the other guest OS's installed, the snapshots button (upper right corner) shows that they have snapshots, but they are not displayed; only the "Current State" is shown. Restarting VirtualBox correctly displays the other guest OS's snapshots; however, while it shows Ubuntu Studio's snapshots, when you try to delete the snapshot again, you get an error that it has more than one child hard drive.
This problem does not occur if I don't install guest additions. If I take a snapshot before installing Guest Additions and then install guest additions, I can restore back to that snapshot and delete it just fine.
I attached some screenshots to show the error messages. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
After trying to delete the snapshot. After restarting VirtualBox Ubuntu Studios' snapshot is displayed, but when trying delete the snapshot the following error is displayed.
