VBox becomes more and more unusable

Post by Lockheed »

VB works worse and worse the more I use it.

Copying from guest to host works, but from host to guest - no way.
I tried reinstalling guest additions, I updated the VBOX once and still nothing. And yes, I have 'Bidirectional' clipboard set in the option.

Also those things do not work on host if guest is running:
- mouse binds (page back, close sub window etc.) so I have to manually click Page Back in browser instead of the mouse Back button
- clicking on gnome menu or running launchers in Cairo Dock (nothing happens after clicking).

This goes away instantly as soon as I shut down VB.

Apart from that, at 7 out of 10 cases, guest cannot restore internet connection on host resume and I have to reboot the guest.

Some people could probably help you if you post some more information. Reading your first few sentences, you are talking about the clipboard, correct?

Which host, which guest, which version of VirtualBox, which version of the Guest Additions? Which networking configuration did you choose for the guest?

Yes, I meant clipboard.

Host: Arch 64bit
Guest: XP 64
VBOX and Guest Additions: 4.0.8_OSE
Network: NAT

It was the same story with 2 previous version

Does your clipboard issue also happen with a Linux guest? This information would be helpful to understand where the problem is.

Regarding your network problems: I don't think that a reboot of the guest is necessary after you resumed the host from suspend. It should be sufficient to make the guest to renew its DHCP lease, did you already try that? Either do that from the Windows guest or force the guest to do so by disabling + re-enabling the network cable connection to the VM. See the network icon in the VM window, right click there and unselect the 'cable connected' checkbox, then OK, then again select the 'cable connected' checkbox, then OK.

Network problem is not as annoying as clipboard working only guest->host way. That what really bugs me.

People, I really need help with this clipboard thing.

Bidirectional - works only as Host-> Guest
Guest -> Host - works fine
Host -> Guest - works fine

Ideas?

From which application do you copy to which application and what keyboard shortcut, if you use it, are you using?

Any application. Neither ctrl+c/v nor RMB+copy/paste work.

As noted above, is it with all Guest OSes, or just XP x64? That's very important.

I don't have other guests ATM but I think it worked on Win7 64bit when I had it few weeks ago.

Anyway, it worked on the very same XP64 few months ago.

We don't really care about past experience, we want to know if it works NOW on a different Guest OS.

I installed another xp64 guest and clipboard works both ways. The thing is that once every few days it also works on the oroginal xp64 guest but it's very rare.

I wonder whether you installed another application on the problem XP guest that also monitors the clipboard (possibly without even telling you). The XP clipboard monitoring functionality expects all applications doing any monitoring to behave correctly and carefully, otherwise all other applications doing monitoring will fail to work properly.
