Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 speed

Post by jimstolz76 »

I was running 10.10 in a VM inside Windows 7 and it was fine. So why I updated to 11.04 is beyond me...but that's another story.

Is it just me, or is 11.04 like trying to run through molasses? I'm not using Unity (running in Classic), and have UPPED the memory given to the guest VM.

Laptop is a 2Ghz Core2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 128MB video memory. The VM has 1 CPU, 1.5GB RAM, 64MB video memory. Ubuntu has all updates, VirtualBox is 4.0.8.

Is this experience unique to me? It's bad enough that I might wipe it out and go back to 10.10... :D

Natty does run slower, but in Unity. I have not see the slowness in classic gnome. Gnome 3 is faster than Unity due to unity relying heavily on compositing, but it seems fast enough to me. Now I did not upgrade to Natty so that may well be the issue. They changed it so much after 10.10 I didn't want the headaches.

Yeah, but I don't have Unity running at all. It wouldn't work so I just left it in Classic.

Maybe I have more things I need to disable.... more searching to do....another day....I've got work to get done... :)

I run natty as Host, and just like I did with previous versions, I stripped it to the bone, so to say. It's pretty fast, no change compared to 10.10 from where I upgraded. But the Natty VM I have, which is a full install, is showing the same behaviour you're experiencing: low performance.
