Ubuntu 11.04 Doesn't Complete Boot

Post by Excels »

Note: this was manually moved from a different, incorrect forum.

Hello, yours truly is back with yet another issue.

I noticed that my shared folder seemed to be missing a few things. I checked in Windows, and they seemed to be there.

Then, an 11.04 update box popped up. I decided that that should take priority, and installed it.

Now I'm stuck with an Ubuntu thing that doesn't seem to boot. It does, however, display a beautiful ubuntu logo, with all the dots orange. VirtualBox 4.0.4 is what I'm running.

Bump. Is there some reason why my topic seems to ignored?

You need version 4.0.8 of VirtualBox to make Ubuntu 11.04 work properly with unity.
Upgrading to 11.04 is not as nice as it should be. You might want to consider installing it new IMHO.

Any idea why what seems to be a UI change completely broke VBox 4.0.4?

I'll reinstall Ubuntu 11.04 then. I'm starting to really hate Linux. I much prefer my Windows Vista - yes that operating system - that doesn't pop up with update notifications every time I boot, and that rarely needs a command line... Although there is the fact that I'm virtualizing one and I'm not with the other.

It's just the price of learning something new. If and when you figure it out you may see that Linux is exactly what you want/need. But it is not for everyone.
By the way there is a way to slow down the amount of updates. Look in the settings of the guest. Most of them you can tell how often to check for updates , although I prefer to get them as soon as possible especially if they are for security.

To be honest, the only reason why I use Ubuntu is because many open source programs dislike Windows, and have installation difficulties with it. I don't think Calligra installs on Windows at all without virtualization.

Furthermore, I do like the relatively painless installation of most packages... (except for ones which specifically ask for Oracle's jdk. Then I get into apt-get and all these crazy things  )

I too, prefer to install security updates quickly. However, how is it possible that they seem to have a release every day?! Hardly 12 hours goes by without another 50+ updates coming in, which, of course, needs to pop up in my face.
