crashes as soon as i try to boot

hi all --
i'm trying to boot mac osx retail (10.6). the first time i got the screen where you specify a drive to install on & it was blank, so i partitioned one. since then VB crashes instantly (i've tried 2 new configurations). there is no error message; it just locks up and then windows informs me it has stopped working. any help would be much appreciated.
