SuSE 11.0 alpha 1 in Virtualbox installs OK, boot fails

Post by phands »

Hi,

Anyone any idea where to start?

I downloaded the SuSE 11.0 alpha 1 iso and used it as an install image on a new virtual machine. The install goes just fine. Starting the newly installed machine fails to boot, with the following messages.....

This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU : 0:6
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I'm using the i386 version on an IBM Thinkpad T60p (Intel Core 2 Duo), so I think the version is OK. just in case, I tried the 64 bit iso, and the install doesn't even start, with the correct message about trying to load 64 bit software on an unsuitable CPU.

I'm wondering if there's some install/boot time kernel argument or variable which will overcome this. I can't see a relevant match in google.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

phands: Yes, maybe it is PAE related. See bug #212

Try to install non-PAE kernel. Install again, and Manually choose packages: "kernel-default" instead of "kernel-bigsmp", ok? and tell us if it works...

Technologov, you got it in one!

The default kernel was kernel-PAE in yast. I selected kernel-default, deselected the PAE kernel and installed as usual.

Execellent : Suse 11.0 alpha 1 running in a VirtualBox container inside SuSE 10.3.

Thank you very much.

Well, no worries !

I'm Suser (SUSE User) after all.

As a small bonus, openSUSE comes with a VirtualBox guide for SUSErs alike... just install "lessons4lizards.rpm", start->help->Lessons for Lizards->VirtualBox.

Alternatively, it can be viewed online:
