download vBox bridged network adaptor
Is it possible to simply download the vBox bridged network driver. I have a Win Vista Home Premium Host that is willing to try to install the driver if only if could be found. The guest is Win XP SP2.
Each time I login (including change of user) I have to supress the same error message 10 times stating that Windows cannot find the driver, would I like to install it. Each time that there is an upgrade to vBox the message sgows an additional 1 or 2 times (it started as 4 times with vBox 3.2.10).
Note that I have also posted a bug report (#7706) but to date this problem has not been addressed.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
Point Windows to look for the driver in the VB install folder and let it search in subfolders too. If that doesn't work, either repair VB or remove and reinstall it. Somehow, the driver didn't get registered. Possible cause is that whoever installed VB chickened out at the message about unsigned drivers and cancelled the installation of the network drivers.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
Following the first suggestion I get effectively the same result as every other time I have elected to get Windows to try to install the driver (although I did notice that Windows initially looked in the Realtec folder for the drivers.
3 dialog boxes appear after Windows attempts to install the driver(s);
The 1st box states;
Unidentified device Failed
VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport Ready to use
Unidentified device Failed
The 2nd dialog box reads;
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error whilst attempting to install it.
VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport.
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).
If you know the manufacturer of this device.....
The 3rd dialog box reads;
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error whilst attempting to install it.
VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport.
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
If you know the manufacturer of this device.....
Uninstallaing / reinstalling is unlikely to work given that this is about the 4th update of VB since the problem appeared last October with the installation of 3.2.10.
The person installing VB (myself) has installed every update since 1.8 and is therefore aware of the Windows scare messages and does not therefore chicken out!
Note that this problem does not occur on my Mac host version that also runs Win XP as guest.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
Those errors indicate some problem with Windows. I do advise you to remove VB, reboot and install VB again. Especially if you did an upgrade all the time, instead of a removal and then new install, Windows could get confused and bug out like this. Mac OSX is a lot easier with these things, as kernel modules are used and they are just unloaded when removed by the upgrade and then new versions are loaded. Windows is a disaster with their drivers.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
I have now installed VB 4.0.8. I followed the suggestion to uninstall old version (4.0.6) and perform a new installation. I get exactly the same result as previously with the now familiar additional dialog box that needs to be run or cancelled (now up to 12 cancellations per login !!).

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
I had hoped that I might be able to make a backup of my database directly onto a USB key as the USB port is enabled, however the USB key remains invisible to the Win XP guest. In the process of searching I discovered the VB log files so I have just enabled Bridged Networking, tried to open the Win XP guest resulting in the usual failure and attach the relevant log file.
I shall now disable the Bridged Network and reboot, this time Win XP will open.

VBox.log- This is the log file obtained when Bridged Networking is enable in the settings. The final 9 lines show the error messages and the fail to boot.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
If you want to access the Host from the Guest, you can also use Host-Only, or use the address 10.0.2.2 if you use NAT. Another way is shared folders to access the Host storage.
As for USB, did you send the device to the VM as described in the User Manual, using the Devices > USB menu (or right click the USB icon in the status bar)?

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
The continuing saga. 1 year on still no bridged network in VB.
Having got fed up with closing multiple "Can't find the driver" message boxes I decided that I would uninstall all the VB driver installations (there was on for each installation. Having deleted 6 of these driver files using the Windows Contro; Panel "Device Manager" I found that 2 of the installations refused to be deleted. I therefore suspect that the problem may be as a result of these multiple driver references in the registry.
In order to test my theory, I need help to find the correct way to totally remove these 2 remaining driver installations.
1 is listed as "Unknown device"
Device status "This device is disabled. (Code 22)"
Device description ""
Driver assembly version "4.1.2.0"
Hardware ID "sun_VBoxNetFltmp"
Removal policy value "00000001" (=default)
Device instance path "ROOT\SUN_VBOXNETFLTMP\0009" Parent "HTREE\ROOT\0"
Install error "There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. E0000203"
Matching device ID "sun_vboxnetfltmp"
2 is listed as "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport #3".
Device status "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
Device description "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport"
Driver assembly version "4.1.4.0"
Hardware ID "sun_VBoxNetFltmp"
Removal policy value "00000001" (=default)
Device instance path "ROOT\SUN_VBOXNETFLTMP\0008" Parent "HTREE\ROOT\0"
Install error "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. 000005AA"
Matching device ID "sun_vboxnetfltmp"
The registry entry is attached.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
Have a look in the device manager and see if they are listed. If so then uninstall them from there.

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
I was experiencing similar trouble, but I think I have it solved thanks to the clue of the "Unknown device" with a VB hardware ID.
Diagnostic:
VB attempts to install a hidden adapter for each real/physical adapter. So, there should be a matching 'hidden' adapter with "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Miniport" appended to the adapter name. In my case, my there are five real adapters: wired, wifi, bluetooth, wimax, and most importantly one for my MAC bridge miniport.
It appears that VB's installation first attempts to configure a matching (hidden) Bridged Networking adapter for each relevant adapter. If this step fails to complete, the VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter never gets installed. Again, in my situation this showed up as only my Mac Brdige Miniport getting a matching hidden adapter -- the installation never made it to adding a matching hidden adapter for the other adapters.
In addition, each time I tried to manually add the Host-only adapter VB would manage to create a 'Unknown device' before bailing and giving me a "Failed to create the host-only network interface" dialog.
Solution:
This is what worked for me -- YMMV.
A valid installation will have the following features:
- In Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections there should be a Local Area Connection named "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter"
- In VB, open preferences (CTRL-g) and select the Network tab. "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter" should be listed under Host-only Networks.
- In Device Manager, for each 'real' adapter there should be a hidden "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver Miniport"
Diagnostic:
- In Device Manager, view Hidden Devices. Under Network Adapters verify that "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter" is missing.

- Before each step, disable virus protection. After each step reboot.
- Follow the instructions for increasing the net filters at the bottom of this thread: ticket/7040. I bumped this number up to 32.
Code: Select all
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters - Delete all the "Unknown device" network adapters
- Uninstall VB
- Delete any orphaned/remaining network adapters with the word "VirtualBox" in the title, including 'hidden' adapters
- Critical step: In Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections right-click on Network Bridge and open properties. Under 'Adapters' de-select everything.
- Install VB (leave the default selection, which is everything)

- In Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections there should be a Local Area Connection named "VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter"

Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor
Hey I am seeing the code 31 on the target network adapter. If I have two it only shows up on one. I am also using bridged network connection.
This seems like a pretty big issue that's been around for awhile?
I tried the work around suggested - but it did not help or make a difference.
