USB eror, please help - I've tried everything

I tried plugging the cable in after the VM has started. The Mac OS sees the drive first. XP VM does not show the drive and the filter selection is grayed out (from the menu Devices/USB Devices, or from the USB icon at the bottom of the screen) and not selectable. Sometimes the filter is not grayed out and after selecting it, I get the "Failed to attach the USB device Unknown device to the virtual machine." error.

Maybe the standard WD USB filter is the problem? How should I configure it to work with any Western Digital external HDD? I have tried clearing all of the fields except Name and Vendor ID. I have also tried setting Remote to all three options and nothing works.

Have you also tried without any filter at all and select the device manually as noted above?

However, what did work is that I edited the filter. I cleared all fields except for the Name, Vendor ID and Product ID fields. Remote was set to Any, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it, as it was set to that from previous failed attempt at getting it working.

I was having this same issue trying to get an external usb hard drive to work and this worked for me. Thanks for the tip! I'm using Mac OS X 10.7.2 host and Windows XP SP3 guest.
