Server 2008 64bit on Windows 7 64bit

Post by shamiraf »

Hi there,

I'm trying to install Win Server 2008 R2 64bit on top of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but the setup errors and says that my processor doesn't support 64 bit. My process is a Core 2 Duo T6500 (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=39311) and obviously it supports Intel 64bit technology and my host OS is 64bit too. Am I missing anything here?

Also I've noticed that the VT-X option is not there in VB settings and no virtualization options are shown under BIOS (I did upgrade my BIOS with the latest version). However I was able to successfully install & run a Win 7 32bit instance and a Win XP instance but failed with the 64 bit versions.

Can someone point me in the correct direction? May be my processor isn't supporting for 64bit Guests or something wrong with VB installation? If the processor is the problem can I achieve my requirement by running VB on a Core i7 2720QM ? It clearly supports all the Intel Virtualization technologies (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=50067)

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!
Shamira

The processor must also support hardware virtualization (VT-x) which sadly this processor does not.

As long and the processor and bios supports Hardware-v it should work for your needs so the i7 with VT-x will work.

my laptop has a core 2 duo P8700 and it supports it... I had to update the bios and enable support in the bios to get it to work but I am running 32 bit windows 7 as a host and 64 bit server 2008 as a guest successfully.

Thanks for the info buddy, your processor clearly has more features than mine (VT-X). I'm anyways waiting for my new notebook which has a Core i7 2820QM.
