Query on network architecture

Post by valver »

First post - hope I don't appear too stupid :) First a bit of background:

I'm currently running Server 2008 R2 (64bit) and virtualising 9 windows OSes using the Hyper-V role.
I'm fairly comfortable with virtualisation and networking, but still relatively new to it. I'm looking to see if I can swap out Server 2008 R2 for a Linux OS (TBD) and then run Virtual Box to serve out my OS'es. My initial reading around shows it looks perfect.

But what I've been unable to determine so far, by reading the manuals or searching this forums FAQs, is if Virtual Box, or a Linux OS (eg pfSense) can perform the role of a TS Gateway (or Remote Desktop Gateway, the terms seem interchangeable?)

I need to be able to access each of my VMs using RDP, from out side my private network - I'll be connecting (probably from a Windows OS) using a seperate Windows RDP profile for each guest VM, over the public internet and then forwarded through a router and on to my VirtualBox...

So far the Remote Desktop Gateway in Server2008 R2 has done the job perfectly - and I'm assuming Linux has an equivalent - but I havent got a clue where to start with Virtualbox and Linux. Does an Linux equivalent require certificates to be hosted?

Any information appreciated. Even just app names for me to follow up on...

VirtualBox doesn't come into the equation at all (just as Hyper-V didn't come into the equation before).

There is nothing magical about virtual networks. They work just like physical networks. If a TS gateway works in one it should work in the other. The place to dicuss Linux gateways is in a Linux forum. If you have some specific VirtualBox networking question, post it here.
