VB 4.0.6 Trouble replacing old guestadditions

Hi there,

i've started using VB 3.2 on my Windows 7 host system. My most important virtual machine is Windows XP. Today i installed version 4.0.6. I uninstalled the old version, leaving .VirtualBox dir untouched. Then i did a fresh install of 4.0.6. Everything went very smooth, way better than i've anticipated. Upon first run of VB i was very happy to see all virtual machines had been recognized flawlessly.
Then i installed Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.0.6-71344.vbox-extpack by double-clicking on the file name and following instructions. The extensions pack had been successfully installed and is currently active (global settings).
My next step was starting my Windows XP vm. It started up fine but i got a message stating that the currently installed "VM virtual guest additions 3.2.xxx are outdated and should be replaced by newer version".
But so far i haven't found a way to update the guest additions. In the Windows XP vm i checked on the top of the screen under "Device". The last menu entry reads "install guest additions (host+d). When clicking on it nothing happens. It seems that it's linked to the old guestadditions.iso (vb 3.2) i've installed and used before. Under global settings it states that virtualy box extension pack 4.0.6 is activated. Do i have to link that extension pack to every single vm? If so how should it be done?

Any help is highly appreciated.
Thx in advance.

Greetings

You're mixing extpack with GA. The GA are the Guest Additions as you noted, which need to be installed in the Guest. Click on Devices > Install Guest Additions. That will load the ISO into the virtual CD. If no autorun pops up, open Explorer and manually install the GA from the disc. If the disc didn't load, make sure the drive is empty and try again.
