Ubuntu 11.04 can't install software or updates

I'm running VBox 4.06 and have been running Ubuntu 10.10 64 fine for quite a while. I installed a fresh version of both 32 and 64 bit Ubuntu and both appear to be working fine with Unity working, but neither one can install software or updates. The download works, but right at the end of the process there is an error.

VBox Additions are installed on these VMs. Is this a known issue? How can I fix it.

I have installed the 32 bit version directly on an old P4 box and it works fine.

Thanks.

Check your network. Next you check what exact error you get. It can be anything, from CRC/MD5 checksum mismatch to out of disk space. You're very vague.

I just tried an update in the 64 bit version.

The error is Package operation failed

Sounds like an Ubuntu issue, not a VB one. Please ask at UbuntuForums.org or Launchpad.net.

I was wondering if it was a VB or Ubuntu issue. Thanks for your help.

You're better off installing the whole OS again before asking somewhere else. Do make sure that the ISO is not corrupted. A reinstall might already fix your problem.

Yeah, I'm re-downloading the iso right now and will try re-installing.

Well, below the download finished I decided to use the Ubuntu media that worked fine on the stand alone old P4 system. I used the same disk to install, and I'm getting the same problem in the VBox Ubuntu. It must be a problem with Virtual Box.

Any suggestions?

Are you using an ISO or optical drive? Please use the ISO instead, that avoids potential read errors on a bad disc, errors in the laser and mechanics of the reader and such.

I did try to install it directly from the .iso (thanks for the tips, didn't realize you could do that), unfortunately the same problem. However, I did installed it on a different machine (a laptop) and it worked fine. So I don't know what the problem is.

So, to simplify my life I think I'm going to stick to the LTS releases and I'm going to reinstall 10.04.2 and run that on both systems until the next LTS comes out. BTW, do you know what/when the next LTS is?

Also, is there a best practice for this question? Should the VBox additions be installed before or after any available updates when doing a fresh install?

Last question, my VMs always get DHCP IPs from my cable modem (10.x.x.x) instead of from my rounter (192.x.x.x). How do you setup the VM to be behind the router, get the IP address from the router?

Thanks.

If the 11.04 works on the laptop, copy the VDI to the not-working Host and see how that goes. If it does work, then something must have gone wrong during installation previously. That could have any cause.

For the other questions:
- It doesn't matter much if you install the GA before or after you've updated everything, but it takes a little less time if you update first and then install GA. Because of kernel updates, the kernel modules has to be installed every time. Either way, doesn't matter.
- What you get is the default NAT IP address, 10.0.2.15. If you want your router to provide an IP address to the VM, then make the VM look like a separate machine on the network. This is done by setting it to Bridged networking.
