Hi!

My laptop currently runs Ubuntu, but I need to switch it to Windows (long story).

My hope is that I will be able to make an image of my current Ubuntu system that I can bring back to life in the form of a VirtualBox guest, running under the newly installed Windows host. My goal is to preserve all the customizations and package installations I have performed on my laptop already.

Is there a way to do this? If not, what would be the closest approximation?

maybe you can achieve this with a special software that boots up and can clone your system partition.
then you boot up this software in your VM (the image of the system partition should be in a shared folder) and rebuild the system partition there again (in the new created empty harddrive).

didn´t test that but seems logical to me. Should be makeable with Clonezilla live. Test it with another PC first!
