I can't click anything the guest machine

Hi,
I've just updgraded my Ubuntu 9.10 to 11.04 (changed sources.list and did a dist-upgrade).
Of course I upgraded to the latest Virtualbox version before upgrading Ubuntu.
The system boots, but then I can't click on anything, as shown here.

The arrow exists (because I can see it and I can go over an icon and highlight it), but I can't click on anything.
Also, my 7 x64 task manager tells me that Vbox is always using 50% of my dual core cpu (that means it's fully using one of the two cores).
Nothing changes if I enable or disable 3d acceleration.
If I can't click on anything, I cannot even open a shell and see if something's going wrong.

Thanks

I doubt if upgrading to unity from 9.10 will work as it will have too many left overs.
Try installing it new and see if it works better. 3D must be enabled in the guest settings, and the guest additions installed (in the guest), if you want the unity desktop. Must use ver 4.0.6 of VirtualBox.

The point is that I don't want Unity, I just want to keep using the old desktop enviroment.
Furthermore, as you can see from the screenshoot,
it loads the classical gnome enviroment.
It's just something with the mouse clicks, I doubt' we can't do anything.

You say that you upgraded VirtualBox before you upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Did you see if Ubuntu 9.10 worked as it should before you ran the upgrade to 11.04?

Sure, otherwise I couldn't have updated the sources.list file and do a dist-upgrade.
It worked like a charm until the reboot.

Ok so the upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 is where you lost your mouse. Doesn't this sound exactly like what I said disregarding the unity desktop?
I have seen issues with upgrading especially jumping over 2 other upgrades (10.04 -10.10). Anyway I did not see any indication in the log file that would cause this issue.
My suggestion is still to install a new copy of 11.04 as a second guest and see if it works properly.

As I said, Unity was maybe installed, but it was not active (or at least I can't see a Unity enviroment as shown in various screenshoot on the web), because the
classical Gnome enviroment was loaded.
Whatever the problem was, I imported the vm into VmWare player (it worked great

), then reimported it into Vbox and the issue is now fixed.
I can't find any logical explanation, but importing it into Vmware player helped a lot.
Also, the cpu consumption appears to be normal now.

edit: as a sidenote, I searched for Unity in a package manager, and it isn't installed at all.
