Hello,

I'm looking to virtualise Windows Server 2008 R2. I know that this is a 64 bit server only.

I'm looking at buying a 64 bit server cheaply on eBay and found that there are a number of Opteron servers that are 64 bit but do not have AMD-VT on them. If I install Debian 64 bit and VirtualBox will I be able to install Server 2008 R2 without VT..?

From the manual I found this:

"On 64-bit hosts (which typically come with hardware virtualization support), 64-bit guest operating systems are always supported regardless of settings, so you can simply install a 64-bit operating system in the guest."

Research on Google isn't helpful as most people simply say to turn on VT. Has anyone got any real experience with R2 without VT and will know whether this will work on the Opteron server or not? I'm looking at a 2x dual core Opteron server and assigning 2 cores to the guest and 2 to the host.

Not possible without VT.

New 64 Bit Processors from AMD have it all. But older one not.

"64-bit guest operating systems are always supported regardless of settings" means that you don't have to specify in VirtualBox software, that VM is 64-bit.
You still must have VT.
