I trying to get into using virtualbox again.
I just have some question if anyone will answer.

-Is still not possible to share vm's between different host? ie. - using a vm on linux then using it in windows? would using the open vm format remedy this?

-has VirtualboxOSE caught up to virtualbox yet?

Looks like you have some refreshing to do - including the terminology.

The host machine is the machine which runs VirtualBox. The vms are guests. Communication between hosts has nothing to do with VirtualBox.

Isn't the OP asking about whether one can take a VM that runs fine on a Linux host over to a Windows host and stll run it? Don't see any problems with terminology on this question. Don't know the answer either unfortunately....

I don't have a problem using a guest on Windows then Linux and back, never have. The hardware and settings must be close though as this would upset a Windows guest. Linux is more forgiving. But VirtualBox does not care at all.

Yes by host I meant different computers. But that's ok, I can just use the guest on one computer then.

Then I understand that you can run more than one guest at a time? - I wish I had gotten that 8 ram instead of 6. Also, more video memory.

In what sense? Can the "open" VM do anything special? No. The capabilities of VBox don't change just because you transport the VM in a different format.

The only benefit to an open VM format is that in theory its portable. IMHO in practice the portability is limited - if the VM you created assumes resources the host just doesn't have then no amount of openness is going to make that VM work. I find it simpler just to move the bare VDI around, with tailored VM settings stored on each host and not moved around. The translation between native / open fornat just provides another complicated feature which can get broken.

The only time i have an issue using the same virtual pc on linux that was on windows is when sharing (shared local folders) and other options (like usb stuff) are used in the configuration. As long as i keep it pretty vanilla with the settings, it swaps back and forth pretty easily.
