Difference between .vdi and vmdk files

I have them both on my Ubuntu,but on fifferent partions one is 5.24Gb and one is 3.25Gb...

I mean do they have the same purpose? And why does some Linux installations get .vdi and some vmdk?can I make all installations to get .vdi?

VDI is VirtualBox's native virtual disk format. VMDK comes from VMWare. VDI is simple and elegant, VMDK is well designed, but with more bells and whistles. As far as a guest is concerned there's no difference. A disk is a disk. Asking why a guest is sometime on VDI and sometimes on VMDK is like asking why cars have different colours: because that was what someone chose to do.
