How do you preserve the windows activation key

Hi I wonder if anyone can help,

I want to backup my windows 7 VM but every time i use cloneHD, Microsoft deactivates the activation key.

Is the another way to backup the VM that ensures all attributes (That Microsoft is checking) are retained..
