Ubuntu 10.10 Running quite slow...

Post by Collin1971 »

Hello, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on Virtual Box 4.0.4. And I am noticing some really sad performance... I have installed the latest guest additions, and have no desktop effects enabled. I will list my Host Specs and Guest Specs bellow...

Host PC :

CPU : Pentium 4 Single-Core (2.80GHz)
RAM : 2GB DDR2 1333MHz
HDD : 40GB 7200RPM
Video Card : Nvida Geforce 210
ACPI Enabled? : Yes
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP, SP3

Guest PC :

RAM : 756MB
HDD : 12GB
CPU : Single Core
Video Card : 128MB, Single Moniter, 3D Acceleration On
ACPI Enabled? : No

When I am not running the virtual machine I have 1500Mb Of Ram free, when running the virtual machine I have about 600MB Avaible, that should be enough to run XP on any computer...

I have all updates installed...

I have noticed that my Host PC CPU is really active... always around 85%

My PC isn't overheating... and the only program I have open is a memory cleaner (So I can watch my ram...).

Any Help would be nice.

Look at the log files for the guest/s. At the top it will show you the total RAM and the amount of available RAM.
That will give you a better indication of what is going on. Plus the VirtualBox program uses memory as well as the guest.
You indication of excessive cpu sounds like a lot of swapping is going on.

Umh... I'm noticing that my PC goes from a page file usage of 500MB when not running the VM and goes to 1.35GB when running the VM. I might be swapping, but it stays pretty steady after that.. that probally explains slow boot up times. :o

As for the logs, they are spitting out tons of errors about the mouse... I will post the log in here =)
But the file is 250kb.. maxium is 128KiB so I'll compress it to zip...

The file was huge, so I had to compress it, sorry!

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.
