One thing I did notice is that VirtualBox Guest Additions Service times out on the host. When I try to start manually I get an error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Guest additions are installed on the guest. That's what guest additions mean.One thing I did notice is that VirtualBox Guest Additions Service times out on the host

I don't know what to tell you. I know this works for tens of thousands of users so it must be specific to your environment. Without actually being there I don't know what else to tell you.
