Virtualbox 4 vdi or vmdk - does 4.0 care which

I've been using Export appliance to back up my machines... I'm afraid that the restore has been a huge problem. Machines will not restore and give very little indication of what the problem is

I've looked for a log to see if there was more info... couldn't find one.

Worst: I can't seem to just use the native vmdk drives to create a new machine... I get boot errors.

2 Questions;

What do I need to do to a vmdk drive so that VBox likes it?
Since the export import function is so flaky how should I back up a machine?

Backup the .xml file tree and the .VDI file(s), I've never used export/import, without snapshots a basic copy will do fine.
