Ubuntu 10.10 as guest No video

Post by xhighman »

Warning! New guy here. Need some help, I'm sure im doing something wrong. But, I can't figure it out.

So, I downloaded VB 4.0.4, I then installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a guest. I'm running xp pro as host. I did not check the "install updates" during ubuntu install.

After installing ubuntu and rebooting, I was prompted to install updates. After installing updates, I took a snapshot.

Being that I have never done this before, I was proud of myself at this point. But it was bothering me I could only get 800x600. So, I searched this forum for answers.

I found these instructions.
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=15679

And followed them. When I reboot, I get the login prompt... and after typing in my password, the screen goes black and I cann't see anything.

I've restored back to the snapshot and have tried several times over,in case I did something wrong. And can't seem to get any video after installing the guest additions.

I started over from scratch on another computer. And again have the same problem. Everything works fine after installing ubuntu 10.10, except the 800x600 res. And on other computers, eveytime I install the guest additions, reboot, then no video after reboot.

Now, at this point, when i have no video... it seems ubuntu has booted in the VB. So when I go to the VB on the host, I can see Ubuntu booted and running in the "preview screen".

I thought that was strange, but when I click over to ubuntu (i still have a black screen) and right click, then go back to the VB screen, I can see that I have right clicked in the preview screen. So, it seems ubuntu is running, but I can't see it. Then, when I try to close the screen, and get prompted to "send shut down to machine". and click ok, the video comes back while its shutting down.

Again, I have restored the snapshot from before installing guest additions and have tried serveral times. I have found manual instructions for installing the guest additions and completed the install that way, with the same problem. And, have tried all of the above on another computer, with different motherboards and video cards, so I don't think it is the video drivers.

I'm just at a loss at this point and don't know what else to try. If anyone could help, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Update!

Ok, So I found this post.

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=30804

states that 3D is the problem. I unchecked the 3D and it now boots.

Now, I really want to fix this. So, does that mean my video card don't support it, or does it mean I need to install drivers? I have tried letting ubuntu search for additional driver, and it doesn't find any.

If you get a black or white screen in the Guest when you log on, it means that it's using a compositing window manager like Compiz and 3D isn't working properly in the Guest. This can happen if the Host has outdated video drivers or incompatible hardware. E.g. an Intel 945 video card is unable to provide 3D for a VM.
