System Restore of Windows 7 to a VirtualBox?

Post by theQuicker1 »

Is it possible to restore a system image backup from my laptop to a VirtualBox on my desktop?

I tried it with a dynamically expanding and fixed size vdi with no success.

No. A sytem restore expects to find the identical hardware which was in the machine which created the system restore. The "hardware" of a vm is quite different.

The easiest thing to do is to use a program called Disk2vhd which is a part of Microsoft's sysinternals suite (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... s/bb842062) - it will create an auto-expanding VHD (Virtual PC harddrive file, fully supported by VB) out of a Windows partition(s) even when the system is running. I personally tried this on a WinXP and Win7 machine, including a setup where I have 2 partitions with 2 OSes (still worked fine).
There is also a step-by-step process described at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows
