Newbie ? - Creating New Win98 Virtual Drive on Mac OSX

Post by DuncanLForbes »

So I am trying to create a new Win98 virtual disk. I booted off a CD created from a Win98 boot disk iso image.

The virtual machine is booted up at the A: prompt. And now I am second guessing myself like crazy.

Can I run fdisk, format /s & then copy my Windows 98 CD over to the "hard drive" like I was doing a regular install on a machine.

I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't going to mess up my system by accidentally running fdisk on my physical drive and not my virtual drive.

Like I said, I feel like I'm doing things right but just wanted to make sure before going for it.

You won't accidently format your Host drive. Read the Tutorials and Rules/FAQ for how to install Win 9x in VB.

The A: prompt in Win98 is a floppy drive, not a CD. You will have to install DOS with CD support before you can use a CD.

Or boot from a boot disk with CD support.

Ok, so I did an fdisk and format and now I can boot to the dos prompt on my "c" drive. The basic dos operating system is functioning fine, although my xcopy32.mod is corrupt and so I can't use xcopy.

The cdrom is mounting fine and I can select it, and access it fine from the shell.

The problem is that now I cannot get setup to run without crashing.

I am running it with the following switches /pj (per suggestion in the tutorial) /is (no scandisk) and because it seemed to be dumping asking for mouse capture I'm also using the /n (no mouse) switch.

The error it is dumping with is:

Standard Mode: Fault Outside Of MS DOS Extender.

If it helps I can do a screen capture of the error.

Ok, just found somebody else's post with the same problem.

Turned off what they suggested and downed the ram to 32 and it is now installing.
