Resize .vdi

Hi List,
I have a virtual Ubuntu machine running on a Win7 host. I created its virtual hard disk as dynamically sized to a limit of 20GB.
While using it I used up 18GB of this and the .vdi file grew as expected.

My problem is that now I've deleted a lot of this data and "df- h" in Linux shows that I'm only using 5.7GB but the .vdi is still 18GB.
Can I reduce this to something closer to the 5.7GB? I'd really love to fit this image on my usb stick.

I'm a first time poster so apologies if this has been answered already, all the posts I've been able to find on resizing are related to increasing disk sizes.
Any pointers to answers or relevant posts greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
