I share and can access the following folders on my Linux host with my Windows 7 guest:
Chess (E:)
Documents (F:)
Downloads (G:)
Music (H:)
My Safes (I:)
Pictures (J:)

I can read/write the documents in F:, play the music in H: (but not with WMP), view the pictures in J:, etc.

But when I try to install software by running a Windows install program from G:, I get the following error: "The specified path does not exist. Check the path and then try again." However, I can copy that same install program to C:\Users\Jim\Downloads and it runs fine.

Is there a way I can run executable files from a shared folder?

Use standard sharing or copy the install files to the guest.

I think I am using 'standard sharing'. Can you elaborate?
