Freezing linux guest hosts on high network load

Hi everybody,
I'm running VirtualBox 4.0.4 with installed extensions on Debian Squeeze (64-bit) with different kinds of guest linux systems, e.g., OEL5.6 and Debian Squeeze (both 64-bit) and I got random freeze on high network load (e.g. copying files via scp). Sometimes it'll survive more than one gigabyte traffic, most of the time it doesn't. The virtualization itself doesn't crash or freeze (no entry in log file of the frozen vm). The frozen linux itself does neither react to mouse/keyboard nor to network connections (host down). Also nothing is shown on the screen.
This machine should replace our production server virtualizing with VirtualBox 3.2, on which the systems are not freezing. To minimize problems, I tried (re)installing both test systems, but I ended up freezing eventually.
The OEL5.6 (with 2.6.32er Oracle Kernel) is more stable If I convert the internal chip to ICH9 and the network adapter to Pro1000 MT. At least I could copy roughly 10 GB without any crash, machine is still running (now only serving network daemons without much traffic).
Debian Squeeze still freezes on network traffic, but randomly up to several gigabytes of traffic. I tried all kinds of network adapters, including virtio without any help.
Is anyone experiencing similar problems?
