After searching through the forums here and across the internet (University of Google) looking for a solution, I have not found a solution to my problem that works so I post it here to see if any of you might have an answer.

First, the technical specs and background of what I am attempting to do.

My host is a Mandriva 2010.2 linux 64-bit machine on an Asus M4A78-E motherboard with an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-core processor and 4 gigs of ram and the version of VirtualBox installed is 4.0.4 PUEL (I need USB on most of my VMs). I have successfully installed Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) and Windows XP Professional on this same machine with no trouble at all.

The guest I am attempting to install is Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) with the following settings:

1 GB ram
2 Cores
20 GB VDI expanding storage
IO APIC Enabled
PAE/NX Enabled (for giving the VM 2 CPU cores)
VT-x/AMD-V enaled
Nested Paging enabled
16MB Video memory
CD/ROM on PIIX4 IDE controller
Hard disk image on AHCI SATA Controller

I can get through phase one of the install (copying of files) quite well, however, when the machine reboots and just after the Windows Server 2003 logo appears, a blue screen occurs with the STOP message 0x8E preventing me from continuing the installation.

What I've tried so far:

Initially and numerous times thereafter tried with the VDI connected to the IDE controller, resulting in the same blue screen error after phase one.
Changed to SATA AHCI Controller and attempted to install (with the F6 driver disk), resulting in the same blue screen error after phase one.
Have tried all possible combinations of VT-x/AMD-V and PAE/NX on or off, all resulting in the same blue screen error after phase one.

What I know of this error is that every time I have seen the STOP 0x8E code it has been related to some virtualization service, most notably the Symantec virtualization drivers in some of their suites on Windows XP Pro machines.

I am attaching the log for this VM to this post. So, anyone got any other ideas? ;) What say you?

Get rid of the Symantec crap, have you tried the install CD as an ISO ?
