Cannot Install Red Hat Linux 9

Post by alainer »

Sorry, I am kind of new to this. I am interested in learning about Linux, but I am hesitant to use Linux as my exclusive OS until I gain more understanding of it.

Some Info:
I have an installation disk for RedHat Linux 9.0.
My current OS is Windows (Windows XP SP3)
I installed VirtualBox
I want to install RedHat as a guest OS on VirtualBox.

Dilemma:
I am able to run the installation, but when I get to the Disk Partitioning Setup....it always fails. No matter what I choose. I get the following message:

Warning:
The Partition Table on device hde was unreadable.
To create new partitions it must be initialized,
causing a loss of ALL data on drive.
Would you like to initialize this drive?

No matter what I choose, it says that there was an error.

I am sorry I am not as computer savvy as many. I am kind of a newbie in all aspects.
If anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated!

If you can kindly explain it in easy terms? I am so new to this and I don't even know what mounting and unmounting

The Redhat version 9 was released in 1995 with the final release in 2003 so I doubt that it will be able to run in VirtualBox.

Thank you so much for the response! I will try another Linux OS.
The one thing I don't quite understand though is that the User Manual for Virtualbox mentions that you can install old OS's such as DOS. Wouldn't Linux 9 be newer than MS Dos?
I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to install another version of Linux.
Once again, thank you so much for the reply! :)

Dont know the exact guest configuration.

But i think there is an sata disc. And that are things that redhat 9 does not know, because its too old.

Maybe you get it working with an ide disc. But you will not be able to install the guest additions. And so it makes no sense.

Give Ubuntu a try. Thats the distro running best in VBOX.

Hey guys! Thank you both so much for the reply! I was able to get it running! I basically played around with the configurations and it worked just fine. I deleted the SATA controller all together and then used the IDE controller. I don't know what this did, but it got Red Hat 9 working. :)

As i said: Redhat 9 is Fred Flintstone, SATA is Starship Enterprise.

NOTE: Red Hat Linux 9 is ancient, and is not supported not as host and not as guest. It means, that while it can run, there are no Drivers (Guest Additions) available for it.

For full Red Hat experience, you must run latest "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6" (RHEL6). VBox supports all it's features, including accelerated 3D and Multi-monitor. RHEL 3/4/5 are supported with most features.

The suggestions provided by other posters make sense, but still, to answer to the first question, for anyone (googling until here and) having the same problem while installing RHL 9 (or any old system) on VirtualBox: VB automatically creates a SCSI disk, but in the properties of the machine it's possible to remove it and replug it in as an IDE disk: this will work, and you will be able to install in text mode. Notice I was not able, instead, to enable the mouse, so I had to do a text install.

(just for the records: I had no choice, I needed RHL 9)
