Hi!

Is it possible to shut down a VM without showing the dialog about shutdown options in Version 3.2.4?
Or maybe pre-defining the choice in this dialog?

If yes: How do I do that?

From the UI, I don't know.
From the command line, if your guest supports ACPI, use: "VBoxManage controlvm guestname acpipowerbutton"

My objective is to make the VM as invisible as possible, while running an application in it, which is not compatible with Windows 7 and has to run in a virtualized WinXP guest system.

At the moment I am almost done, there are only two things left annoying me:

1. The VM is being started through a desktop shortcut with target
> "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" startvm WindowsXP-VM <
where "WindowsXP-VM" is the name of my VM.

The problem about this one is that this makes the VM start in window, even if I choose "minimized" in the shortcut properties.

After the OS has bootet and Windows desktop appears, the VM automatically switches over to seamless mode, just like I want it.

Now the Application starts via AutoStart, the User works with it, and when he is done, he wants to shut down the VM just by clicking the [X] in VirtualBox's seamless mode control bar.

2. The shutdown dialog appears, asking for the way to shut down.


The problem about both of the above is that the User doesn't have any IT/computer knowledge, but needs this application to work with.


So, if you have any ideas how to fix the two points above, please tell me.

Why don't you use VBoxHeadLess instead of VBoxManage? In this case, you wouldn't have *any* window displayed.
If you want seamless mode, VBoxSDL would be better.

I think you could start from a snapshot taken when you application is ready, instead of booting from your guest, in order to speed up this.

Try the option --termacpi with VBoxSDL. I've not tried it myself, but I think that it should remove the need for VirtualBox to ask the kind of shutdown you want.
