Win7 in Mint 10

Post by ric00015 »

I currently have Win XP and Mint 9 (both 32-bit)(Linux Mint is based heavily off of Ubuntu) installed side-by-side on my current computer, with the dual-boot option. I try to use Mint as my main OS 'cause I dislike many things about Microsoft and like many things about Linux. However, I need Winblows for various games and developing software (yes, I know about development software native to Linux. I'm just using it for school). I have used Wine with varying degrees of success, but Windows is a better environment for that software. The problem right now is, I need to reboot into Win to use said software.

I'm massively upgrading my 6 year old computer, and going to use Mint 10 and Win7 (both 64-bit), and thinking of using VirtualBox to use Win7 as a VM inside of Mint 10. I have browsed several threads here, and can think of several problems I may encounter, mostly with the games. The whole purpose of this post is to find out what problems I may have and how to overcome/get around them.

Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Web 4 I believe rely on .NET, so Wine wouldn't work for them at all, but in a virtualized Win7 environment, I believe they would. My main problem then would be with WoW, Steam, and my other games. They rely on DirectX and/or OpenGL, which I've heard doesn't run properly in VirtualBox.

I have put this in 3 places; here, in the Linux Host forum, and Windows Guest forum. Thanks in advance for any help.

MOD Edit: cross posting is not allowed other (2) posts deleted.

Edit: Sorry about that. I wasn't sure which forum was most appropriate.
