Windows XP crashes when installing guest add ons

I had a VM session under VB 3.02 and it has been running fine, even in the 4.0 host. Then I updated the host
(Vista64) to 4.02 and decided then to update the guest to the 4.02 add ons. Upon reboot the guest crashes
-blue screen. If I go back to safe made I have a restore point that goes back to the 302 add ons and all is fine.
I am now on 4.04 to see if that fixed it - it did not. Other VM machines (all XP also) are ok in the same host
machine. The guest in question has SQL Server in it.

The blue screen message does not really help. "Plug and Play has detected an error most likely due to a faulty driver"
There is one line of technical information-see attachment

What else can I look for or is it ok to stay at 3.02 guest additions?

TIA

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

When it is running ok with 3.02 guest additions the differences are:

State: running (since 2011-03-03T1...
Video mode: 1280x707x32
Additions run level: 2

Could you also post a guest log file (one with the old GAs and one with the new GAs) so I can see the difference? Please use the attachment and not paste.

The logs really don't indicate a problem that I can see. You say that you have other XP guests that did update and run properly so now we need to see what the difference of those are.
  • (1) Did you at any time install the guest additions on the one in question in safe mode to get enable 3D?
    (2) you also say that you are restoring the guest when it fails due to the 4.0.4 GAs, are you using the MS system restore point or something else?
    (3) can you try to remove the guest additions (in safe mode) before you upgrade them instead of just upgrading over the top and see if this helps?
I would suggest that you back this guest up if it is critical to you until the problem is resolved. Does the guest have snapshots?

I will try comment # 3 and let you know

-there are no VM snap shots
-the update of the Guest Additions was done like the other VMs- overtop the old one in 'normal mode'
-I use MS restore

Thanks for the suggestions and guidance

No change in status on different methods / attempts to update to current guest additions.
Must be a driver somewhere since in safe mode it is ok / does not crash.
My plan is to live with it as long as possible and rebuild the virtual machine from scratch at a later date. :|
