Updating VirtualBox 3.x to 4.x

Post by [ Xi0N ] »

Hi all!
I have been using virtualbox in my headless server for the last months, and now im going to upgrade virtualbox 3.x to 4.x... i think its mature enough to start working for production, and im wondering.... what about the machines that i currently have running?
As i noticed, the directory structure for storing the vms has changed so...... do i have to export the vms, upgrade and the import them, or do i just have to upgrade, not minding the old dir structure? (Will my vms be there after upgrading?)
I wait for your advice.... thakns! :)

Register all VDI as immutable and try it out to see what happens.

Yes, but if something were wrong, i would have to fall back to version 3......
I think i will go with the export-import way....... should be safer......

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

That is, unless you need new features in version 4, is there any reason to change? Experiment with v4, but if your setup with v3 still works, maybe it would be best not to fumble with it in an environment that's ready for production. I'm running SBS2003 and XP guests on an XP host in version 3.1.2. It works and I probably won't bother to upgrade unless a serious problem comes up...

Ok, I simulated the setup in another machine..... all went ok...

I exported all the appliances (once i switched all them off).... then, i uninstalled 3.x...... and purged config..... deleted phpvirtualbox as well......
Then I installed v4 from zero.... and restored the appliances I backed-up before.... everything is working perfectly in v4. No problems at all.

What did I win?: Bug fixes, new interface of phpvirtualbox, etc... not critical, but neither it was the use of the VM's... I could have re-installed them in any other machine in no time...

Thanks anyway!! :)
