I agree with kriko.

Using Ubuntu 7.1 on a MacBookPro, iSight web cam was correctly identified by the Windows host but a usb dongle wasn't. I note 1.5.4 has usb2 echi support, I think something is broken :-(

btw I went back to 1.5.2 and that works fine.

For permissions related issues (Ubuntu) look here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox

My experience with 1.5.4 OSE was not good. When I installed 1.5.4 PUEL it is OK. I just found out that I need to do

#VBOX=$(grep vboxusers /etc/group | sed 's/vboxusers:x:\(.*\):.*/\1/')

and

#mount -t usbfs -o devgid=$VBOX,devmode=664,nodev,noexec,nosuid none /proc/bus/usb

every time I reboot. Also to unmount any USB devices from the Linux host before starting the guest.

On uninstallation, try to search with synaptic package manager for "virtualbox". Then do a "complete removal", before installing another version.

And I also removed the line in fstab as suggested by holsch.

USB working here on openSuSE 10.3, but with same issues as 1.5.4 (Card reader). Still sticking to 1.5.2.

Have a look at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ (USB on openSUSE10.3). I've just checked out myself that this works on an up-to-date openSUSE10.3 (x86_64). So at least accessing the USB devices from the host should be possible. Of course it is still possible that some devices do not work -- we are improving USB support further.

@Frank Mehnert: I'm running newes vbox now, however unfortunately my card reader got destroyed by lightning, so now I don't have any broken devices to test if this got fixed (it was replaced by a different one - this one works).

Update:
Nokia N95 doesn't seems to work properly - it is detected and installed under device manager, however pcSuite shows a warning that phone cannot be recognised.
