Hmm. I assume then that you modified the base snapshot in your snapshot tree.

It will be interesting to see if merging works, since what you have already done (modifying the base layer upon which all later differencing snapshots are depending), should by rights leave you with a VM that won't run, whose virtual drive can't be merged etc. I suppose there's an argument for saying that changing the header parts of a VDI (which is all that's involved in enlarging the drive) doesn't actually change the existing drive image (just appends a new bit), and hence should not necessarily imply changing the modify-UUID, hence may not have ruined the snapshot tree. It's not a gamble I'd have wanted to take tho... I hope you took a backup first!

problem solved.

I think the fact that I still had snapshots makes it impossible to resize the harddisk. Somehow frustrated after 5 hours of work I restored the VB stuff from my TimeMachine.
Next I've deleted (merged) all snapshots. When trying to resize the harddisk using the VBoxManage modifyhd command I still got an error (cannot attach hard disk). But thanks to this forum that could also be sovled; using the UUID instead of the filename.

Afterwards everything runs fine and within 15 minutes my virtual harddisk is now twice as big.
Why not just in the first place ;-)
