I have a Windows 95 VM (I use it to run old games) and it comes with Internet Explorer. I followed a guide for win 95 in VirtualBox (just google "Windows 95 VirtualBox" and you'll find it) and it tells me to "setup VirtualBox to NAT, and AMD PCnet-II network chip" and Windows 9x will auto detect it. But there is a problem with my setup: I can't set it to AMD PCnet-II, that is not an option. I have tried all the options, none work. Could it be because I'm using Ubuntu? I must add that everything else in the tutorial works perfectly, it's just this one thing...

The item you have selected on the shot is the adapter you have to use. The name didn't change, if you check the hardware inside the Guest you will still see AMD PCnet. But in the VM settings, it doesn't have the AMD name attached to it.

OK but there is still a problem, though: it doesn't get auto-detected, and I can't get on the Internet. I've tried add new hardware, but it keeps asking me for the "Windows 95 CD-ROM". I have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, but when I tell it the cd is in the "X:\" directory (which it is, Win 95 told me that), it tells me "Unable to find file: [forgotfilename].dll, please insert Windows 95 CD-ROM". I noticed that the tutorial is for Win 98 SE, so it probably isn't the same for 95, but does anyone know how to get it to work?

I have made progress into getting the internet to work: it now asks me for a DNS server and an IP Gateway. For the DNS Server I used Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. For the IP Gateway I used the default gateway of my wireless router (probably wrong, but windows 95 does not know the meaning of "ipconfig"). Does anyone know what I should put in the boxes?

First off, the equivalent to "ipconfig" on W9x systems is "winipcfg".

OTOH I wonder why you try to use a public DNS and manual IP configuration (i.e. the guest IP, the netmask and the gateway), as DHCP works just fine for me. To test this I pulled out a terrible old W95 CD-ROM and did a quick test: I just removed the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX-compatible protocols and added TCP/IP instead. I did not even touch the TCP/IP configuration as it defaults to DHCP anyway.

I'm also wondering why you're going the manual IP config way, when you're using NAT. The whole point of the NAT network option in VB is that you just install the OS and forget the network settings.

I don't know what you mean by "going the manual ip way". I simply clicked internet explorer and that was what came up. I tried removing the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX-compatible protocols and leaving the TCP/IP one. Now the dialog disappeared and I am simply getting errors telling me I am not connected: "Unable to find google.co.uk" and stuff. Does 95 even support non-dialup internet?

It should, if you have the right version. If you can use network interfaces, then it should be able to connect to the internet through the LAN connection. Run the internet connection wizard from control panel and tell it to use the LAN instead.

I did. That's what gave me the ip address dialog. That's why I wondered if it wasn't fully supported.

Ok, but did you have an option to use DHCP for network settings? You're the first to report this problem and I really wonder if we should continue discussing this. It's not really a problem with VB as it is with Windows 95. You would have the same problem if you were to install it on bare metal, if you can find hardware that's old enough to run it on.
