Guest Additions 4.0.4 Setup Failure: Installing mouse filter

The Oracle VM VirtualBox Guest Additions 4.0.4 Setup stalls on "Installing mouse filter...".

The Guest Additions install eventually fails with an error message about reinstating previous drivers to insure integrity for the VB Guest Additions.

I have tried to install Guest Additions in Safe Mode and in Standard windows with the same result.

My windows version is Windows 7 Home Premium, with all of the latest updates.

The failure is a bit tricky since the error message appears behind the install window and you can only find it by moving the front window away.

Is this a bug? or is there a work around?
