Hi there,
I am new to VirtualBox and I have install Windows XP in Virtual with Ubuntu 10 as my main operating system. I have installed windows normally, installed my softwares and everything seems to work fine, except that USB storage devices are not visible in Windows XP. When my seagate external drive into a USB port, Ubuntu opens it and show it's content normally. But if I go in Windows XP in VirtualBox, I can't see it. In Computer, I see hard drive C, my DVD/CD reader/writer but not the USB key.
Reading other messages, I tried something in VirtualBox, I went into my Windows XP VM settings to USB. I plugged my seagate external drive. I added a filter for this drive in the USB filter. That worked. I removed safely my usb drive. I started my Windows XP VM. When everything was running, I tried plugging my external drive again. Still nothing...
Any help?

Re: USB Key and USB External Drive not working
Version 4.0.* and newer require that you install the Extension Pack How to install Extension Pack
You also need to add your user name to the vboxusers group on the host
A minimum of logoff is required when changing permissions and maybe a reboot of the host.

Re: USB Key and USB External Drive not working
Ok, I have installed the VirtualBox extension. That worked fine. I searched a little bit to know how to add my username to the VBoxusers Group, I tried something like:
usermod -a -G vboxusers raphael
I get something like:
cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
Sorry, I am new to Ubuntu, got it last Christmas. Any help how to add myself my Username to the VBoxusers Group or to clear the problem above??
Thanks

Re: USB Key and USB External Drive not working
usermod has to be run as sudo (elevated user)
