Virtual Box in Headless (newbi question)

Post by Fenloh »

Hi @all

i am kind of new to linux and Virtualbox. I have managed to install a proper Debian Sqeeze ;) and the Virtualbox. I have created a Virtual Machine named "Test". I modified the machine to listen to vrdeport 5000 (and some other modifications to memory and so on). I then started the machine using VBoxManage startvm Test --type headless.

The VM seems to be running (VBoxManage list runningvms shows "Test" and the UUID.

I thought that i can connect from this time on to the Virtual Server using mstsc.exe (since i want to administrate it from a Windows Workstation).

Now the Newbie Questions:
Am i wrong with my assumption?
How do i continue (i am german and the rtfm Command on my brain did work, but it had not the desired effect) to install the Debian System?
What program kann i use to connect from a Linux Workstation (Which rdp do you think is best).

Sorry for the noob questions, but my brain is smoking atm and i could use a hint.

Hi, sorry i can't help much with headless due to some lack of experience...

to make life easy: apt-get install xrdp installs a full blown RDP server on the Debian Squeeze host ;)
my preferred RDP client is tsclient but that just has been removed from Debian Testing cause its unmaintained and "there are better alternatives" :(
remmina and gnome-rdp are alternatives ... try remmina

I'm having the same problem of getting RDP access to my Linux guests on my Ubuntu 10 host.

I'm going to give xrdp a go on my; however, I'm a bit surprised that VirtualBox isn't already doing that for me.
What does the Display / Remote Display / Enable Server do?

RDP works against my Windows guests OK. X and VNC also work. I must be confused about what VB's RDP Server is providing.
