Environment:
* Version of VirtualBox installed : 4.0.2
* Type and version of the Host Operating System : windows 7 ultimate
* Type and version of the Guest OS : windows 95
Problem:
1.video only 16 color,no posibility to choose 256
2.no sound
3. all sort of errors (will be show them in attachments to the my msg)
Attempted Resolutions:
i searched the user manual but the info there doesnt help as none of the options worked the sound (Intel AC'97 controller/Intel HD Audio controller/SoundBlaster 16 card)
i saw something similar in the FAQ but it leads to nowhere and it isn't exactly describes my problem.
i saw this thread too: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27018
but it didnt gave me a solution too because i tryed to install all of realtek's drivers and it didnt do anything, still no sound.
errors 1 and 2 i get regardless of my described problem, just happen to snapshot that.errors 3,4,5 and 6 i get (as you can see) when trying to run command & conquer
edit:
i forgot also to mention that before win95 is starts up,it sais that some files are missing or something:
vnetsup.vxd
nwlink.vxd
nwredir.vxd
nscl.vxd
vredir.vxd
ndis.vxd
ndis2sup.vxd
vnet...

Re: I got Windows 9x running, but sound and video are limited
VMs are not for gaming.
Win9x is not supported.
Only thing you can change: Read the Win9x Howtos in the tutorial section how to get better vga resolution.

Re: I got Windows 9x running, but sound and video are limited
In a VM Performance, Sound and VGA is limited, as you see yourself. So its not a good base for gaming.
Some old games may work. Modern games doesnt.
Win9x is not supported means, that there are no guest additions for this crappy old dos based os. And dont ask, there will never be some one.
Better results in a vm you get always with XP and installed guest additions.
So throw WinDOS to garbage, where it belongs to.

Re: I got Windows 9x running, but sound and video are limited
i already try to run command & conquer (tiberian dawn) on windows xp and it didn't work so im pretty much in the corner here.
btw,
i tryed the "Tutorial: Windows 95/98 guest OSes" FrodoHobbits gave me and, audio problem solved! thanks FrodoHobbits!!!
all i have trouble now is with video.
in the same tutorial,i downloaded and tried to install "SciTech Display Doctor version 7 beta driver" on the VM but there was an error sais "an I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or corruption file."
any suggestions? maybe there are more programms like virtualbox that are for installing such games?
any solution would be fine with me as long as it runs command and conquer (tiberian dawn).
thanks a lot in advence!

Try the other listed driver (BearWindows).

Re: I got Windows 9x running, but sound and video are limited
Have you not yet tried installing this game on your host (I'm assuming you are runnig Win7) and playing with the "Compatibility" settings ?
You never know, it might work
Even if you get your Windows 9x guest to run as you want it, it will be so unbearable slow.
Sorry I can't help any further.

Not in a corner so much as dead and buried. If you already tried a XP VM and couldn't get adequate performance, assuming the GAs were installed and 2D and 3D graphics acceleration was enabled - then switching to Win9x which is less efficient to start with, and has no performance assistance GAs at all... is not going to work.Lion-O wrote:i already try to run command & conquer (tiberian dawn) on windows xp and it didn't work so im pretty much in the corner here.
Nope, it's what Stefan said - VMs are not good for gaming. I suspect you took his comment as a negative statement about gamers, but no, it's a negative statement about VMs, which simply can't have the performance of native hardware. VMs are better for apps that don't need top hardware performance.
