VNC support

Post by drewhvt »

Previously I used VirtualBox 3 open source edition, using VNC to connect to the virtual machines.
Is it possible to use VNC in VirtualBox 4, or has support for VNC been complete removed?

What little information I've found suggests that VNC support has been removed, which is absolutely astonishing - if true I can no longer use VirtualBox as free software.

My understanding is that the VNC support is still there if you use the self compiled version (do it yourself) of VirtualBox.
It also would depend on the Distro you install from whether or not they continued to support VNC on the OSE version.
To achieve this you would enter VBOX_WITH_VNC=1 in the LocalConfig.kmk which you would have in the top level of you build directory.

Thanks - does anyone have a build with VNC support pre-compiled for Ubuntu? I'm not exactly setup to compile VirtualBox, and I would hate having to recompile for every update.

VirtualBox 4.0.6 OSE, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

For me there wasn't a LocalConfig.kmk file in the build dir (and modifying the other ones in the different sub directories didn't work).

Finally found (by searching all of the files in the source dir for "VNC") that to enable VNC, you need to run the configure command as follows:
./configure --enable-vnc

Or create the LocalConfig.kmk and add the line to it.
There are other build switches that you can use as well in the LocalConfig.kmk

Can you please add this information (needing to create the LocalConfig.kmk file if it doesn't exist) to Board index ‹ General ‹ Howtos and Tutorials ‹ Building VirtualBox < Build support for VNC instead of using VRDE (Ext.Pack)? Thanks.

I thought everyone would know to do this but I guess I was mistaken. Edit has been made to the tutorial. Thanks.
