i have a pc that doesn't have much ram (512mb) and have windows XP installed on it

i want to be able to boot from my W7.vbox file (that has win7 on it) and the accompanying vdi file (W7.vdi) it is stored on a external hdd (on my win7 pc) that is shared on my home network
can i leave the vdi on the external drive and boot using it through the network?

here is an image of my network as it is at the moment

Forget it.

Maybe a better solution since your PC is memory deprived is to run the guest on the host and access it via vrde or rdp from the XP machine.

no i want to boot straight away from the vdi and not go into XP at all (like boot from pxe for a network boot)

Since a VDI file is just that a file, that works with a hypervisor, how do you plan to do this? To be able to use the VDI file VirtualBox needs to be running, and since VirtualBox is a type 2 hypervisor (meaning it requires an OS to work) I don't see this working at all.

kk is there any way of booting a fully functional windows operating system from a network drive?
