host only network not working

Post by abruenin »

I am running 4.02 on Win7 64-bit as host, guest is Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.05. This image run without problems on an Ubuntu host with VBox 4.00, now I switched to Win7, 64-Bit.
NAT networking runs, but I don't get a host only network running. It should be eth0, but ifconfig does show no eth0, just eth1 (NAT).
I also tried an internal network as eth2. This one shows up in ifconfig, but only gets an IPv6 address.
The VirtualBox host-only network adapter shows up in the Windows control panel.
Already uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled VBox, but does not help.
Any ideas how to get it running?

TIA

The eth0 device is inactive in the client. When I try to activate eth0, I get

Determining IP information for eth0...PING 10.0.2.2 (10.0.2.2) from 10.0.2.15 eth0: 56(84) bytes of data.

NAT networking runs, but I don't get a host only network running. It should be eth0, but ifconfig does show no eth0, just eth1 (NAT).
Make sure that you have both setup in the guest settings. One to host-only and one to NAT.
Now start the guest and make sure that they both say cable connected and edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules or you can delete the rules and Linux will configure it on the next boot.
Once rebooted you should see both eth0 and eth1 set to the proper addresses.

Yes, did that

I don't have this file. All I find in /etc/udev/rules.d/ is

05-udev-early.rules 60-raw.rules 90-alsa.rules
40-multipath.rules 60-vboxadd.rules 90-dm.rules
50-udev.rules 60-wacom.rules 90-hal.rules
51-hotplug.rules 61-uinput-stddev.rules 95-pam-console.rules
60-libsane.rules 61-uinput-wacom.rules 98-kexec.rules
60-net.rules 85-pcscd_ccid.rules bluetooth.rules
60-pcmcia.rules 88-clock.rules

Any more ideas?

Double checked this with a 2nd machine. Installed VBox 4.02 on a WinXP 32-Bit host. There it is slightly different with the same image: on this machine, eth0 shows up, but only has a IPv6 address.

From the host command window VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

As well as the results of ipconfig /all from the Windows host

Note: you will need to be in the directory where VBoxManage is for the command to work.

Re: host only network not working

Post by abruenin »

Did some more testing. My first try was just to mount the vdi that ran on the Ubuntu-Host and start it. Then eth0 (host only) had no connection.
I tried to vboxmanage clonehd it and tried again. Now eth0 is available, but only got IP6 address. But I can manually assign the IP4 address I wanted, so I have found a workaround.
But as I want to give this image to customers, I would like to have DHCP working.

Any ideas?

Ups, the workaround does not work. I can assign an IP address, but I cannot communicate between host and vm.

Doublechecked it with 3.2.12 and it worked immediately. Tried again on 4.0 and 4.02 and host-only networking
is broken on both. Going back to 3.2.12, it worked again. This also worked with 4.0 running on Ubuntu host.

So this seems to be a 4.0x on Win7 64-bit issue.

Should I open a bug somewhere?

I all !

Don't really understand why using Host-only bridge my host is able to ping the guest at 192.168.56.1 but when using firefox ... nothing

My gust is a LXDE::Debian linux distrib with ofcourse apache2 running on it (127.0.0.1 gives the apache page)

I define a virtualhost with a name but nothing more still answering that the connection couldn't be established !
From windows XP I can ping lxde.local (whixh is the name of the guest in my host), under the guest asking for lxde.local (withe a firefox like browser) I have the good page, using, under windows the http://lxde.local in firefox gives nothing !

what's the stupid thing I miss ? I don't know

Hi, all.

I troubleshooted a similar problem recently. I documented the solution on my blog.
Unfortunately this forum doesn't allow new users to post URLs.

But it's easy to find via typing "Ozmoroz blog Troubleshooting eth0 in Oracle Linux" into Google.
