Re: Ubuntu 10.10 Host, WindowsXP Guest Problem
Is this a full retail install of Windows XP? With the newest service packs?

So do you mean it is a physical to virtual install, or RAW, ETC.?Yes, but it was initially installed on version 3.x
Please be more clear as to the build.

These were my approximate steps:Perryg wrote:So do you mean it is a physical to virtual install, or RAW, ETC.?Yes, but it was initially installed on version 3.x

- I installed VirtualBox 3.X
- I created a new VirtualBox machine.
- I put my windows xp install disk into my host machine and installed windows XP on my new Virtualbox.
Does that answer your question?

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 Host, WindowsXP Guest Problem
Yes thank you for clarifying.
The next step should be to click on the devices tab and then click on install guest additions.
This should bring up the install but sometime it will not and you need to start the install manually by opening the file manager.
Then you need to reboot for the changes to take effect. If you followed these instructions and you still are having problems then I suspect something did not install properly when you installed the guest. It is very rare for the guest additions not to work at all. Have you already activated the Windows XP version? If not I would think about installing it again and see if a driver was missed. Did you see any issues during the original install?

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 Host, WindowsXP Guest Problem
I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 4.04 guest additions several times without any success. The install does not indicate that there are any issues.
My XP install is activated. I have been using VirtualBox with this guest machine since version 3.0 was first released. I was running version 3.2.12 with guest version 3.2.12 until yesterday, when I decided to upgrade VB to version 4.04. After the upgrade, my virtual XP machine was working fine (it was still running guest 3.2.12). I installed guest version 4.04, rebooted, and now I have this problem.
If we don't come up with a solution, is it possible for me to downgrade VB back to version 3.2.12?

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 Host, WindowsXP Guest Problem
You can try to regress but I don't really think it should be necessary. I have Windows XP working just fine as a guest.
Try this first and tell me how it work. Go here http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.2.12/ and download the 3.2.12 guest additions iso and put it on the host where you can then mount it in the guest. Uninstall the 4.0.4 GAs and install the 3.2.12 GAs and see if it works.

Re: Ubuntu 10.10 Host, WindowsXP Guest Problem
Installing the 3.2.12 GAs worked. I'll stick with this until the problem gets resolved.
Thanks for your help with this. Let me know if I can provide logs or anything else to help with a real solution.

Do you have avira antivirus installed ?
I have been having the same problem - solved by uninstalling avira antivirus and re-install of GA 4.04
