No audio in guest Windows XP

I've installed Windows XP SP3 (Russian version) on a virtual machine under OpenSuse Linux 11.3. Most of devices work properly excepting audio. In the Devices Manager there is an unrecognized audio device. As I tryed to look guest machine tools contain no configuration. I've tryed to plug the virtual CD with guest machine tools but Windows Devices Manager hasn't found some driver for the audio devices there. I've checked everything I could: the guest OS is set to Windows XP, audio is enabled, etc.. But Windows still doesn't accept drivers for the virtual audio device. All descriptions over the Web say just something that I understand without them and I've not succeeded to find some troubleshoot information about audio. So there is no audio under Windows XP.

XP has the AC'97 drivers build-in. If you don't select that device in the VM settings, you won't have audio. If you did, then your XP has been modified and stripped of that driver. Thus it's not a normal Windows and we don't help with those. Only official Windows versions are supported here.

Thank you, it works! The only problem remains is with microphone. But may be it's the host machine problem, so i'll try to ask Linux support.

Hi I had the same problem (no sound in guest XP on SuSE), selecting the correct "driver + controller" in VMVirtualMachin (I use Oracle VM 4.1.6) solved the issue, follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

Launch VM VirtualBox (don't start/boot WinXP yet) -> in menus click on "Machine" -> "Settings" -> "Audio" -> (make sure "Enable Audio" is checked) now select the following:

"Host Audio Driver" = OSS Audio Driver.
"Audio Controller" = ICH AC97.

And that's it, boot your guest OS, audio should work fine.
